Why the Question “Why?” Matters
Every documentary we make begins with a single question: why does this story need to be told now? That question directs research, shapes interviews, and focuses creative decisions. A strong “why” helps the team cut through noise and find a clear narrative path.
Stages of Production
- Research & concept: identify stakeholders, gather background, and outline potential angles.
- Script & treatment: write a flexible script that allows for discovery during production.
- Pre-production: scouting, logistics, casting (if needed), permits and scheduling.
- Production: filming with sensitivity, prioritizing natural light and authentic moments.
- Post-production: editing, sound design, music, and color grading.
- Delivery: final formats, subtitles, and client approvals for broadcast or festival submission.
Collaboration across these stages is crucial. Directors and editors should be in conversation from day one. Producers need to ensure the plan is realistic, especially in settings where time and access are limited.
“The craft of documentary is planning for discovery — structure without suffocating the truth.”
For YOUniverse, documentary filmmaking is both a craft and a civic act. We believe films can inform policy, support advocacy, and elevate marginal voices. That responsibility shapes how we approach storytelling — with care, accountability and a focus on impact.
